Mad Hattery

I know I promised pants in my last post.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get pictures due to technical difficulties.  By technical difficulties I mean I lost my camera charger.

Fortunately I was able to snap a few iphone photos of my newest project. . .

Vogue 7464

It's a hat!  I'm making view B, which is the top left view.

"Ummmm, Jill, where are you going to wear that thing," you maybe wondering.  Glad you asked.  I've got a fundraiser coming up for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with a tea party theme that seems like the perfect excuse to deck myself out in 1940s millinery finery.

More on that later.  Right now I'm just excited to have an excuse to make a hat.  I've had my eye on this pattern for about two years . . . since right about when I started sewing and consequently when I started prowling the catalogues at Joann Fabrics.  A few months ago fortune smiled upon me and I won the pattern in a giveaway from the awesome Dibs of Dibs and the Machine.

I'm pretty much planning my whole outfit around this hat.  So I figured it should be made in a statement color.  I'm not really a purple person, but this "orchid" felt called out to me.  Perhaps because a large portion of the selection was bold primary school colors.  Here it is:  Orchid.  With the pattern pieces laid out and ready to be cut:

That hulking dark thing on the right is my dress form with a cardigan on it.  I made a knit!  Guess what my next post will be about.

So, uh, it appears I might have purchased a teensy bit too much felt.  The envelope said to buy 5/8 of a yard of 78" felt.  This is a full yard.  But even if I had purchased half that amount it is way. too. much. felt.

Guess who may have more than one orchid hat in her future?

  1. I can't wait to see what that hat looks like! I'd love to make something like that, but there are no teas in my future. At least, not at the moment. And yes, you'll either have multiple hats or something else, but either way I'm sure a day will come when you'll be glad you bought all that extra fabric!
